European Border Security Market Sees 37% Reduction in Irregular Crossings by July 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – According to preliminary data from European Union, irregular border crossings into the bloc declined by 37% during the first seven months of 2026. Frontex recorded roughly 61,000 detections at the EU’s external frontiers from Jan. 1 to July 31, a decrease compared to the same period in 2025. The majority of key migration routes experienced fewer crossings in this timeframe. These figures serve as the latest indicator of irregular entry activity at the EU’s external borders.

The Eastern Mediterranean continued to be the most active route, with 20,232 detections, representing a 28% decrease from 28,068 in the same period last year. The Central Mediterranean followed with 16,454 detections, which is a 55% drop from 36,656. Combined, these two routes made up around 60% of the total detections at EU borders. Libya remained the primary departure country along the Central Mediterranean route during the seven months.

Conversely, the Western Mediterranean experienced an increase, with 11,217 detections—up 37% from 8,175 a year prior. Sea crossings on this route totaled 8,648, compared to 7,096 in 2025. Land detections until June reached 2,569, an increase from 1,079. The Western African route saw a significant 60% reduction to 4,682 detections. Similarly, crossings through the Western Balkan route dropped by 26% to 4,910, while detections at the Eastern Land Border decreased by 44% to 3,209.

Mediterranean routes account for the majority of EU border detections

Data for crossings toward the United Kingdom indicated another notable decline. Frontex reported 22,469 attempted or successful crossings leaving the EU, a 46% decrease from 41,647. These Channel crossing figures are not included in the EU entry total. The agency also recorded 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, which is a 9% increase. The seven-month data exclude exceptional border events at Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based its estimates on preliminary EUROSUR data available as of Aug. 4, emphasizing that future revisions are possible as authorities update information. The statistics reflect detection counts, not unique individuals, meaning one person may be registered multiple times if they cross at different locations or on separate occasions. This distinction is significant when comparing route totals to the overall number of migrants involved across the agency’s external border data.

The seven-month figures confirm the ongoing decline seen in the first half of 2026

These latest statistics extend the downward trend observed after the first six months of 2026, when Frontex recorded over 49,000 irregular border crossings—a 37% reduction from the previous year. During that period, detections on the Western Mediterranean route were 17% higher than in 2025, but the seven-month comparison shows a 37% increase. The Western African route experienced a 67% decline through June, which further decreased to 60% in July.

Frontex reports approximately 3,800 officers deployed at the EU’s external borders. Their responsibilities include supporting national authorities with border control and maritime rescue operations. They also assist member states in implementing rules under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latest data indicate that route patterns remain inconsistent—most major corridors show significant declines, except for the Western Mediterranean route, which has seen an uptick.
