According to GeoSphere Austria, 157 of its 277 monitored weather stations recorded new maximum temperatures for June. Additionally, 66 stations registered their highest temperature ever recorded in any month. Vienna hit 40.0 degrees on June 28, while Bad Deutsch-Altenburg saw 40.1 degrees the next day. Several low-lying areas experienced 10 to 14 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.
The Wegener Center at the University of Graz estimated that the combined socioeconomic damage from the June and late July heatwaves reached approximately €1.4 billion. This preliminary estimate covers health impacts, productivity losses, agricultural damages, infrastructure stress, and increased cooling demands. It also considers effects on ecosystems and public services. This figure is not an official government assessment nor a complete insured-loss total, as insurance data only reflects damage covered under active policies.
Heatwave intensity surpasses previous Austrian event
The Wegener Center assessed these heat events through area-degree days, which integrate heat intensity, duration, and spatial extent. They calculated approximately 16,700 area-degree days for the June heatwave. Their evaluation placed the late July event between 22,700 and 25,000. Austria’s prior record was during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which registered around 22,100 area-degree days across land below 1,500 meters in elevation.
High temperatures also correlated with a notable rise in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety estimated 395 such deaths in June 2026, marking the highest June total recorded since the agency began tracking this data. Heat-associated mortality refers to excess deaths above expected levels during periods of intense heat, not necessarily indicating heat as the direct cause on each death certificate.
Drought conditions worsen amid decreasing rainfall
Austria faced the heatwave after experiencing several months of unusually dry weather. From January 1 through July 27, total nationwide rainfall measured about 426 millimeters, compared to the long-term average of 609 millimeters for the same period, resulting in nearly a 30% deficit. Authorities described the first seven months of 2026 as the driest comparable period since at least the early 1900s. Some of the largest rainfall deficits were recorded in Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland.
Persistent high-pressure systems, prolonged sunshine, and limited rainfall increased evaporation during late spring and summer, reducing soil moisture and stressing crops, rivers, forests, and water supplies.
