US Government Enhances Belgium Travel Advisory Amid Security Concerns

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The U.S. State Department has revised its travel guidance for Belgium, advising Americans to exercise heightened caution due to issues related to crime, terrorism, and civil unrest. Released on July 23, the advisory continues to categorize Belgium at Level 2 on the department’s four-tier scale. The update emphasizes risks associated with criminal activity and disturbances, along with a revised summary, but it does not recommend avoiding Belgium altogether. Travelers are advised to be more vigilant and review official safety information prior to departure, as Level 2 guidance urges caution rather than avoidance.

US updates Belgium travel advisory over crime and unrest
Belgium remains at Level 2 under updated US travel guidance on crime and unrest.

According to the advisory, petty crimes such as purse snatching and pickpocketing are prevalent in well-frequented tourist destinations. The report notes that many offenses against international visitors involve thefts from bags, along with robberies and stolen electronics. It highlights locations like major cities, restaurants, train stations, buses, trams, and the Brussels metro during nighttime hours as areas needing particular caution. To protect valuables, travelers are encouraged to keep their belongings close, carry limited cash and ID, and stay attentive to potential distractions in crowded environments.

The authorities pointed out that train trips, especially along the Brussels-Amsterdam route, have seen an increase in bag thefts. Thieves often target light bags stored on overhead racks. The advisory emphasizes that passengers should keep their cash, passports, and other valuables within reach and recommends motorists lock car doors, close windows, and avoid leaving belongings visible inside parked cars. Belgian Federal Police warn that criminals frequently operate in teams, using tactics like crowding, bumps, or staged distractions to steal wallets, phones, and travel bags.

Enhanced focus on crime and transportation dangers

The section on terrorism states that violent incidents and related threats continue to pose risks in Belgium. It identifies public gatherings, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, educational institutions, parks, shopping districts, and transit hubs as potential targets. The guidance notes that terrorists and their sympathizers may also aim at U.S. citizens abroad. Belgium’s Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis currently assigns a Level 3 threat, categorizing it as serious, with officials considering a Level 3 threat as possible and likely on their four-point scale.

The advisory also emphasizes the possibility of demonstrations and strikes, which, although often peaceful, can lead to disruptions in transport and essential services. The State Department indicates protests may be organized over political or economic issues, during major holidays, or significant events. Police routinely monitor such gatherings, and travelers are advised to avoid large crowds. It is recommended that visitors stay updated on local developments, monitor traffic alerts, and modify plans if public transportation is delayed or shut down.

Preparation and vigilance advised for travelers

U.S. officials recommend enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP, either before or during travel. The program provides alerts from the U.S. Embassy in Brussels and assists in contacting travelers in case of emergencies. Americans should also familiarize themselves with Belgium’s entry requirements, local laws, and health advisories. U.S. visitors can stay up to 90 days without a visa, and passports must be valid for a minimum of three months beyond their planned departure from the Schengen zone.

Travelers are encouraged to remain alert in tourist areas, around banks, and at ATMs. It is advisable to stay informed through local updates and know how to contact emergency services. Belgium’s emergency numbers are 112 for life-threatening situations across Europe, and 101 for local police assistance. The U.S. Embassy in Brussels offers consular support for Americans. The July update maintained the current advisory level but added the risks of crime and unrest to the overall warning for visitors to Belgium.
